Routing

In audio terminology, Routing refers to changing the path of the audio signal (usually refered to as the "signal path" and includes everything the electron goes through all the way from microphone and out through the monitors). Routing can sometimes involve splitting (multing) and/or combining (summing) the signal. alot of patchbays are set up with mults, basically a row of plugs that work to split and duplicate the signal so it can be sent to multiple things.

A Mixing Console is a device that specializes in audio routing. Mixing consoles allow you to combine many signals into a single stereo or mono bus, send the signal to alternate output busses, and split the signal to send to multiple busses and/or aux sends.
