A preamp (preamplifier) is an amplifier that boosts a low level signal such as a line level DI or microphone to a level suitable for processing and further amplification down the line.

They are most commonly found as the first stage in the signal chain of a mixing board. The quality of preamps varies greatly and they can greatly alter the sound.

Most low end gear is quite simlilar in characteristic but when using preamps at high end studios, the choice of preamp can make a noticeable difference in the outcome of the sound.

The most common high end preamps are manufactured by Neve, API, and SSL. Just like microphones, compressors, and various other audio electronics they amplify in various ways including among others using solid state or tube circuitry.
