History
Originally called Performer, Digital performer began its life in 1985 as a MIDI sequencer, with no audio recording capabilities. It was renamed Digital Performer after the addition of audio recording.
Features
Digital Performer is a Multi-Track recording application which acts as a front end to MOTU's Digital Audio Interfaces. It comes with many Real-Time Effects, such as eVerb and the MasterWorks EQ, Compressor, and Limiter. Digital Performer also has built in pitch editing for monophonic sounds.
AudioDesk
AudioDesk is the entry level version of Digital Performer which MOTU ships with most of its Digital Audio Interfaces. While using the same interface, AudioDesk has a less features and effects than Digital Performer.

Tips
Digital Performer 5.1 has major stability issues with some setups. Upgrading to 5.11 fixes this issue.
