What is the "Little Phatty"?

The Little Phatty
The Little Phatty
The Little Phatty is a monophonic Analog Synthesizer from Moog Music.

History

After many rumors, Moog released the Little Phatty on March 29th, 2006, in Frankfurt, Germany with a list price of $1475.00 (in US dollars.)

The Little Phatty was the first analogue synth released after the death of Moog Music's founder and namesake, Bob Moog, who was a pioneer in the field of analogue synthesizers. In tribute to their founder, Moog Music's initially released a special, limited edition run of 1,200 individually numbered Bob Moog Tribute Edition synths.

According to Moog Music's Website the limited run, Tribute Edition of the Little Phatty "has special Moog wood side panels, a Bob Moog signature plate across the front and rear, comes with a CD-ROM featuring highlights of the Bob Moog Memorial Celebration Service and a special Bob Moog poster."

Features

True Analog

The Little Phatty is a true analog synthesizer, claiming a 100 percent analog signal path. The key components of Little Phatty's signal path are:

  • 2 Ultra-stable Oscillators
  • 1 Low Pass Filter (Patented Moog Ladder Filter)
  • 4-Stage Analog Envelope Generators
  • RACâ„¢ Real Analog Control is a proprietary technology enabling the performer to directly interface with the analog circuitry via the knobs on the control panel, without any digital processing.

Controls

The Little Phatty has a 37-note keyboard with +/-2 Octave Transpose, a Spring-loaded pitch wheel, Mod Wheel, and Glide On/Off.

There are 4 value control nobs, one for each section: Modulation, Oscillators, Filter, and Envelopes.

Each is surrounded by a ring of 15 LEDs that show approximately the stored or edited value of the current parameter. The value controls are analog, and when a parameter is activated, the analog control signal is switched to directly control that parameter (RACâ„¢ or Real Analog Control).

Continuous parameters (like Filter Cutoff) are controlled from a front panel by first activating a switch and then adjusting its value control.

For each section, only one continuous parameter can be activated at a time for editing. For parameters that have multiple possibilities (such as Mod Source) pressing that switch advances through the possible Mod sources. For On/Off type switches like Osc. Sync, the LEDs are On when that parameter is on or Off when the parameter is off.

Inputs and Outputs

The inputs and outputs are located on a side panel, except for a 1/4" headphone jack which is located on the front panel.

The side panel offers the following:

  • AC In (100-250VAC, 50-60 Hz
  • Power On/Off
  • Audio Out
  • Ext. Audio In (accepts +4dBu line level signal)
  • Pitch CV In (1 V/Oct)
  • Filter CV In
  • Volume CV In
  • Keyboard Gate In
  • MIDI In
  • MIDI Out
