Distressor Compressor
From WikiRecording
Empirical Labs Distressor is modern compressor that has a wealth of settings that provide for new as well as emulations of many older optical, tube and FET compressors. Frequency response is 2Hz to 160Hz with a dynamic range of 110db, distortion ranges between .02% to 20%. can be stereo linked. Includes eight unique curves for a wide variety of settings.
Attack:50us-30ms
Release: 50ms-3.5seconds in normal mode, and up to 20 seconds in 10:1 opto mode.
Ratios:1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, 6:1, 10:1, 20:1, "NUKE" (nuke is basically a brickwall limiter, i.e. the signal usually won't get more than 1db above threshold)
The low ratios have very soft knees, while the 6:1, and 10:1 have "opto" knees meaning they emulate compressors like the LA-2A.
=The Distressor has 6 audio modes:=
1: "Normal" is clean has no induced distortion. THD hovers between .025 and .3%,
2: HP - High-pass filter rolls off below 80hz (-3db at 60, -12db at 30hz)
3: Dist 2 THD hovers between .05-3% w. emphasized 2nd harmonic, 2nd harmonic distortion is supposed to be the most musical forming the warmest and most "consonant" harmonic distoriton
4: Dist 2 + HP
5: Dist 3 THD hovers between .1-20% w. 3rd Harmonic distortion increased. while the 3rd harmonic distortion is more similar to what a tape machine might do.
6: Dist 3 + HP
=Example settings provided by manufacturer:=
Vocals: ratio: 6:1 or 10:1, attack: 5-10, release:4,0 audio mode: HP
Acoustic Guitar: ratio: 4:1, attack: 3, release:4 audio mode HP
Electric Guitar: ratio: 6:1, attack: 4, release:5
Bass:ratio: 2:1-6:1, attack: 5, release:5
Drums:ratio: 6:1-Nuke, attack: 4-6, release:3
Room Mics:ratio 6:1-Nuke, attack: 3-8, release: 0-5
