A CPU, or Central Processing Unit, is perhaps best equated to the "brain" of your computer (the short term memory being the RAM and the long term memory being the Hard drive). The CPU does most of the "thinking" (logical and mathematical processing) for the computer.

The faster a CPU is, the more it will be able to processes in a given amount of time.

For recording, the CPU handles most of the audio analysis, effects, recording and playback of audio. The faster the CPU is of your computer the quicker audio analysis will be, the more effects you will be able to run, and the more tracks you will be able to playback and recording simultaneously.
