What is a Boundary Microphone?

A boundary microphone has a hemispheric polar pattern (a half-sphere).

Using an Omnidirectional microphone as a Boundary Microphone

An omnidirectional microphone set into a flat surface is a boundary microphone. A boundary microphone will pick up direct sound of nearby sources

- without exhibiting the phase effects that happen when a nearby surface reflects sound and either cancels or amplifies elements of the waveform.

- enhanced by +6dB due to pressure maximum effects on the boundary layer (which the capsule itself is)

- therefore reducing ambient sound relatively by -6dB.
