What is a Boundary Microphone?

A boundary microphone has a hemispheric polar pattern (a half-sphere).

Using an Omnidirectional microphone as a Boundary Microphone

An omnidirectional microphone set against a flat surface is a boundary microphone. A boundary microphone will pick up the ambient sound of a room without exhibiting the phase effects that happen when a nearby surface reflects sound and either cancels or amplifies elements of the waveform.
