Abbey Road Studio 1 Orchestra Setup
From WikiRecording
This article shows a setup of a string and percussion orchestra for a film score in Abbey Roads Studio 1. It is used here to demonstrate some of the stereo techniques discussed in various other pages. Employed for this session are the AB stereo, Decca Tree, ORTF Stereo, Room Microphones, and close miking of both sections and individual instruments.
The session runs down into a Neve 88RS board runnning into multiple Protools HD rigs. One is a 16 track rig dedicated to providing video/sync, while the other two take the individual tracks. The monitoring is handled by a 7.1 biamped B&W Nautilus system.
- Red=Decca Tree
- Blue= AB stereo (althought fairly far apart)
- Pink= ORTF Stereo
- Green=spot or close mics
- Yellow= close and stereo section mics of the percussion
The Abbey Roads microphone setup showcasing the different microphone techniques employed. The AB, and Decca tree are in a line across the front of the orchestra, underneath them are the 2 sets of 2 green close ups (more in reality but they are hidden). Another out of view room microphone was placed behind and to the left 3/4 of the way up and nearish to the behind upper left corner most probably to pick up more of the room and reflections.
